Anchors, Chains, and Ropes - Equipment Recommendations

Based on the regulations of the Germanischer Lloyd for sailing ships and motor sailers with a displacement of up to 100 tons, we recommend equipment with anchors, chains, towing and anchor ropes, as well as mooring lines, as outlined in the table below.

Comprehensive guidance on selecting the right anchor for your ship can be found here.

Anchors

The weight specifications of the anchors in the table refer to "high holding power" anchors (HHP). Examples of high holding power anchors include KLIPP anchors, D’HONE anchors, BRIC anchors, FAST anchors, KACZIREK and Bügel anchors, C.Q.R. plow anchors, WING anchors, and M anchors. Please note the markings in our catalog! A stock anchor or weight anchor should be 1.33 times heavier than the specified weights.

Anchor Ropes and Chain Leaders

Anchor ropes should be 1.5 times the length of the specified anchor chain. Ships with a waterline length of less than 15 meters can also use both anchors on ropes with chain leaders. For vessels with a displacement of up to 1.5 tons, the chain leader should be 3 meters long. For heavier ships, the recommended chain thickness is up to 8mm, with a chain leader length of 6 meters.

Chains

The chain sizes refer to the nominal thickness of our hot-dip galvanized anchor chains according to DIN766.

Mooring, Anchor, and Towing Lines

The diameters for mooring lines, as well as anchor and towing lines, refer to our Perlon rope according to DIN83330 and can also be applied to polyester ropes. When equipping, it should be noted that the breaking strengths of our PP mooring lines, PP rope SPLIT, and ROBLINE SPUNFLEX rope are 28-35% lower.

Anchors

The anchor weights in the table refer to “high holding power anchors” (HHP). High holding power anchors are, for example KLIPP anchors, D'HONE anchors, BRIC anchors, FAST anchors, KACZIREK and stirrup anchors, C.Q.R ploughshare anchors, WING anchors, M anchors. Please note the marking in our catalog! A hanger anchor or weight anchor should be 1.33 times heavier than the specified weights.

Anchor lines and chain leaders

Anchor lines should be 1.5 times the length of the specified anchor chain. Vessels with a waterline length of less than 15 meters can also use both anchors on lines with chain leaders. Up to a displacement of 1.5 tons, the chain leader should be 3 meters long. For heavier vessels, the following applies: Recommended chain thickness up to 8 mm, length of chain leader 6 meters.

Chains

The chain thicknesses refer to the nominal thickness of our hot-dip galvanized anchor chain according to DIN766.

Mooring lines, anchor lines and towing lines

The diameters for mooring lines as well as anchor and towing lines refer to our Perlon ropes according to DIN83330 and can also be used for polyester lines. Please note that the breaking strengths of our PP mooring line, the PP SPLIT rope and the ROBLINE SPUNFLEX rope are 28-35% lower.

Equipment - in general ...

... all vessels should be equipped at least as follows:

  • 2 single-length mooring lines.
  • 2 mooring lines of 1.5 times the ship's length.
  • For larger vessels, 2 additional lines of this length are recommended.
  • 2 mooring and mooring lines twice the length of the ship.
  • 1 anchor line.
  • 1-2 towing lines of 5 times the waterline length. For vessels with a displacement of over 8 tons, 4.75 times the waterline length is sufficient; for vessels with a displacement of over 29 tons, 4.5 times the waterline length is sufficient.
Please note: Mooring lines, mooring lines and towing lines made of Perlon and polyester sink, lines made of polypropylene (PP) are buoyant.
