Notes on battery disposal

In conjunction with the sale of batteries or the delivery of devices containing batteries, we are obliged to inform you of the following:

As the end user, you are legally obliged to return used batteries. You can return used batteries that we carry or have carried as new batteries free of charge to our store (Notkestr. 97, 22607 Hamburg). The crossed-out wheeled garbage can symbol on the battery means that the battery must not be disposed of with household waste.

  • Pb: Battery contains more than 0.004 percent lead by mass.
  • Cd: Battery contains more than 0.002 percent cadmium by mass.
  • Hg: Battery contains more than 0.0005 percent mercury by mass.

The devices supplied by us often contain batteries or rechargeable batteries. As these contain toxic heavy metals, they must not be disposed of with normal household or residual waste. Used batteries and rechargeable batteries must be disposed of at a municipal collection point or recycling center. TOPLICHT ensures that batteries are disposed of in a professional and environmentally friendly manner via an authorized waste disposal company. You can therefore also return batteries and rechargeable batteries purchased from us with sufficient postage or hand them in directly at our store.

Batteriegesetz (BattG)

The BattG came into force on 01.12.2009. It is a directive of the European Parliament and the Council on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators. Among other things, the law stipulates binding take-back quotas and limit values for the use of cadmium and mercury. Batteries must be marked with a crossed-out wheelie garbage can. The symbol means that the batteries must not be disposed of with normal household or residual waste. In addition, batteries containing heavy metals above a specified threshold must be labeled accordingly: “Cd” for cadmium, “Pb” for lead and “Hg” for mercury.

Special regulation for starter and consumer batteries

When selling starter and consumer batteries, the seller is obliged to charge the end user a deposit of EUR 7.50 (incl. VAT) in accordance with § 10 BattG. This does not apply if the end user returns a used starter battery to the seller when purchasing the new starter battery or presents proof of disposal. By handing in the old battery or proof of disposal, the end user can also have their deposit refunded if they do not wish to purchase a new battery. Sending the old starter battery to the seller is not permitted due to the dangerous goods regulations.

Alternatively, old vehicle batteries can also be handed in free of charge at recycling centers. The deposit we charge is not refunded by the public recycling centers. However, you have the option of having the return of the old vehicle battery acknowledged on the deposit stamp. You will receive the battery deposit back from us on presentation of the receipted deposit stamp.

Please note the above information.
