PEOPLE OF THE SEA / James Wharram, Hanneke Boon
From
€19.95 *
James Wharram's life changed forever when, in his early twenties, he saw Thor Heyerdahl's film about the Kon-Tiki voyage and came across a book about Polynesian double canoe sailboats in Manchester Central Library. He decided to refute Heyerdahl's claim that Polynesia could only have been settled from South America and not from Southeast Asia, which would have required a more sophisticated vessel than a balsa wood raft.He devoted his working life to demonstrating the seaworthiness, windward capability and practicality of the Polynesian double canoe form, and probably sailed more nautical miles in boats of this design - all of his own design - than any other man.For sixty-five years James Wharram designed, built and sailed boats in the shape of Polynesian double canoes, demonstrating with them that the sea, far from being a barrier between islands, was their artery of communication. Long before Western man "discovered" them, the "People of the Sea", as many inhabitants of the South Pacific islands called themselves, had a vibrant, socially highly developed culture in which water travel played an essential role.Inspired by James Wharram's lifelong creativity and spirit of discovery, many modern "People of the Sea" sail all seas in boats they built themselves from Wharram's designs.James and his team's ocean voyages culminated in their circumnavigation of the globe on the 63-foot Spirit of Gaia, exploring the lands and cultures of their spiritual homeland, the Polynesian Islands.James Wharram died in December 2021 at the age of 93.2nd revised edition. 272 pp. Colour plates, numerous black and white photographs, drawings and diagrams, bibliography, index. Format 15.6 x 21.6 cm, softcover with thread stitching, cover flaps and matt lamination. In English.

DETAILS OF DINGHY BUILDING / W.N.C. Stirling
€38.00 *
Nothing compares to a traditionally clinker-built small boat - whether it is rowed, sailed independently or used as a dinghy for a larger vessel. If the building is "done right", the result is a boat that is a true ornament on the water, that charms all who use or see it, and that retains its value. In Details of Dinghy Building boatbuilder Will Stirling meticulously describes and illustrates in colour the many arcane but vital tasks that can daunt the budding boatbuilder. Will has been building clinker dinghies professionally for many years and has made all the mistakes that lurk for the unwary and learned how to avoid them. Benefit from his experience and some "tricks of the trade" and be inspired by the many stunning photographs of finished boats that grace the book.If you are building a boat yourself, this text and photo reference book will save you time, frustration and embarrassment. WORKING SAIL. A LIFE IN WOODEN BOATS / Luke Powell
€52.00 *
description:
WORKING SAIL
Luke Powell has almost single-handedly revived the building of traditional pilot cutters in the UK. In Working Sail. A life in wooden boats he describes his rich, rather unconventional life, which he has enjoyed to the full. In doing so, he does not hide the fact that he had to struggle for a long time to gain acceptance for his wooden boats, which ultimately earned him his impeccable reputation.Luke's interest in boats began when he climbed over the rotten wrecks that sank into the mud in the creeks of his childhood in Suffolk. At the age of nine, he set sail with his family to the Greek islands. From then on, the sea was his school. After an apprenticeship as a shipwright restoring Thames barges, he returned to the Mediterranean and the nomadic life of a journeyman boatbuilder. Over time, he gained a French girlfriend - the first of many long-term partners in his adventures - and "Charmian", a 75-year-old cutter. In 1990, with his young son on board, he sailed the "Charmian" up the Helford River in Cornwall, little suspecting that seven years later this would become the home of his boatbuilding business, Working Sail.Luke's arrival in England coincided with a resurgence of interest in traditional boats. After stumbling across a book about dazzling pilot cutters, he vowed to build one from scratch. Risking what little money he had to buy wood, he built "Eve" himself - almost with his bare hands. Success came gradually, but to this day Luke is driven by a passionate belief in skills, craftsmanship and values that cannot be expressed in money.Over the years, several boats have been launched in the Helford - "Lizzie May", "Agnes", "Hesper", "Ezra", "Tallulah", "Amelie Rose", "Freja" - whose names are a list of some of the most admired boats built in the UK in the recent past.Luke Powell describes their creation with a very fine sense of good storytelling. Working Sail was first published in 2012. This third edition was printed in 2022.Luke and his team's construction of the 65ft pilot cutter "Pellew" from 2017 to 2020 in Falmouth is pictorially described in another book, Christian Topf's "From the loft floor to the sea" (Article-No. 9225-003). See further down on this page under "Similar products".240 pages. Hundreds of colour and b/w photos. Format 26,5 x 24,0 cm. Printed on good quality matt coated paper. Hardcover with sewn binding, matt laminated. In English.
