Moitessier was considered the likely winner of the well-paid 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race when, after rounding the third of the great capes (Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn) in the Atlantic, he turned away to "save his soul". Renouncing fame and the cash prize, he cemented his legendary reputation as a philosopher among circumnavigators and coined statements such as: "A long ocean voyage is the shortest way to yourself."
At the time, however, the whole world initially shook its head in disbelief when the Frenchman sailed to the solitude of the Tahitian Islands instead of the English harbour. His book "La longue route" (original title of the book) describes the background to his decision.
