Wilfried Erdmann (1940-2023), Germany's best-known cruising sailor, died on 8 May 2023.The single-handed sailor and non-fiction author inspired the sailing world with his adventures and books and popularised the sport of sailing in Germany. He made his first journeys (from Germany to India by bicycle in 1959) in secret. He then spent five years at sea as a sailor in merchant shipping.The fact that he was the first German to sail around the world alone in 1967-1968 was not believed at first.
