Wilfried Erdmann (1940-2023), Germany's best-known cruising sailor, died on 8 May 2023.
The single-handed sailor and non-fiction author inspired the sailing world with his adventures and books and popularised the sport of sailing in Germany. He made his first journeys (from Germany to India by bicycle in 1959) in secret. He then spent five years at sea as a sailor in merchant shipping.
The fact that he was the first German to sail around the world alone in 1967-1968 was not believed at first. However, this achievement was soon recognised and Erdmann became the sailor of the nation. This was followed by a circumnavigation with his wife Astrid and a three-year South Sea voyage with his wife and son Kym.
Record-breaking voyages finally made the exceptional sailor known to a wide audience.
From 1984 to 1985, Erdmann was the first German to sail single-handed non-stop around the world in a west-east direction, i.e. with the prevailing winds. From 2000 to 2001, he circumnavigated the world again single-handed and non-stop - this time against the prevailing westerly winds in an east-west direction. He was the fifth sailor in the world to complete this voyage. He is also the only sailor in the world to have circumnavigated the globe non-stop in both directions with the same boat (KATHENA NUI).
To date, there are only two Germans who have completed a non-stop single-handed circumnavigation after Erdmann: cruising sailor Susanne Huber-Curphey (2018/19) and racing sailor Boris Herrmann (Vendée Globe 2020/21). This further emphasises Erdmann's performance.
With his books, Wilfried Erdmann made the fascination of long voyages as well as travelling under sail on your doorstep tangible for his readers. He broke sales records with some of his numerous books.
Johannes Erdmann, a former editor of the magazine "Yacht" who is not related to Wilfried Erdmann, has now published the first biography of this extraordinary sailor and Spiegel bestselling author.
The friend of Wilfried Erdmann conducted interviews with 20 people who accompanied him on his journey to write "Wilfried Erdmann - from the outside in". From the conversations with Boris Herrmann, Arved Fuchs, Ranga Yogeshwar, Burghard Pieske, Erdmann's yacht KATHENA NUI and many other companions, friends and family members, the author reassembles the many facets of Wilfried Erdmann's life and career and traces his impressive courses.
He is supported by photographer Andreas Lindlahr, whose pictures provide new insights into the life and world of Wilfried Erdmann.
A very readable tribute to the exceptional sailor and author Wilfried Erdmann, who has inspired generations of sailors.
160 pages, numerous photos, hardback. German edition.
