The rope gets its easy to grip, "wooly" cover through a very fine, elaborately spun, absolutely decay-proof polyester yarn.
Traditionally 3-stranded the rope is extremely easily spliced and the ends can be melted and sealed.
Works well for pulleys and halyards on gaffers and traditional yachts, as well as for fancywork and model-building.
