Products from Silva

In 1928, the Swedish mechanical engineer Gunnar Tillander invented the first compass on a base plate that was suitable for orienteering. The three brothers Alvar, Arvid and Björn Kjellström (later Swedish champion in ski orienteering) supported him in the development of this new type of compass for terrestrial navigation, which was equipped with a liquid-damped magnetised needle and a protractor built into a transparent base plate.
Founded in 1932 by the four Swedes, Silva Sweden AB has sold more than 25 million compasses to date. In addition to its hand-held compasses, the company has long since also offered boat compasses, binoculars and outdoor equipment such as headlamps.
The book ‘Be expert with map and compass’, published by Björn Kjellström in 1955, about off-road navigation and orienteering, has been translated into several languages. The English version is still available today and has sold more than 500,000 copies.
